NSW NATIONAL PARKS & WILDLIFE SERVICE -

DUNE RESTORATION - JIBBON BEACH, ROYAL NATIONAL PARK

The sand dunes of Jibbon Beach had become extremely weed infested due to damage caused by pedestrian traffic. The NPWS had previously done very little work in this area due to a 'hands off' approach, post 1994 bush fires. Microclimate was contracted to carry out primary weed control on this sensitive area. Our main objective was to reduce the weed density whilst ensuring that the fragile dune ecosystem remained protected. It was estimated that approximately 40 tonnes of weed material was removed by hand over a 10 day period. The area was later maintained by 'dunecare' volunteers.

DEPT. OF DEFENCE - SOIL CONSERVATION - NTH HEAD SCHOOL OF ARTILLERY

The School of Artillery at North Head in Sydney is managed by the Dept. of Defence for military purposes. This headland contains remnant coastal heath and is considered to be of high conservation value. The headland adjoins Sydney Harbour National Park. This area had been highly disturbed in the past by various military activities and as a result severe soil erosion had occurred. Microclimate was contracted to carry out soil erosion control in various areas on the headland. This involved the spreading of seed laden brush selectively cut from existing vegetation, it also involved the building of a vehicle 'board and chain' accessway on an eroded fire trail. Brush-matted areas were also planted with tubestock grown from locally collected seed.
