Nursery & Seed Bank

Microclimate have collected and stored a vast seed-bank from many different areas. Much of our seed-bank has been collected from northern and western Sydney and is growing constantly (we also have seed from many other areas).

Some of this seed is stored for later use, whilst much of it is used in our nursery to produce plants either for our own projects or for general sale.

The selection of species in our nursery is ever increasing and contains many rare or unusual locally indigenous ground covers, water plants and rainforest trees. We also have a large selection of more 'common' species from Sydney and surrounding areas.

Propagation of specific species for particular circumstances (such as rare & threatened species) can also be undertaken. Our Assistant Manager, Emma Langton is especially skilled in plant genetics and completed her university honours thesis on the genetic characteristics of a threatened Grevillea species.

For large areas we are also able to collect, process and 'direct sow' native seed straight onto the site. We have done this on many projects and found it to be very successful, particularly when done in conjunction with revegetation (seedling planting). We are happy to advise on this process if required.

HSC - Revegetation of Arcadia Park, Arcadia

Arcadia Park had previously been a vegetation waste tip. Even after the engineering works were complete the site was still unstable and serious erosion problems were occurring. In 2003 Microclimate was contracted to carry out revegetation and also to sow native grass seed onto the site to stabilise it. The grass seed that was sown was a mix of local native species and sterile cover crop. The native grass seed was from Microclimate's seed bank and was collected from within the same catchment as Arcadia Park.
